James Silver profiles Andy Coulson, who has resigned as David Cameron’s Director of Communications, blaming coverage of the News of the World phone-hacking scandal. It is said a spin doctor should never become the story, but David Cameron’s Communications Director, Andy Coulson, has been catapulted into the spotlight after News of the World staff were accused of paying private investigators to intercept the phone messages of politicians and celebrities while he was the editor. James Silver examines the life of a man whose job is to create headlines rather than be the subject of them. At the age of 32, she emerged as the country’s youngest national newspaper editor when Rupert Murdoch appointed her to the helm at the News Of The World (NOTW) in 2000. Just 10 years earlier, having studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and working on a magazine in the city, she got a job answering the phones at The Post in Warrington. When that paper folded she talked her way into a similar job at the NOTW and quickly climbed the ranks. As NOTW editor she famously led a campaign for “Sarah’s Law” – named after murdered eight-year-old Sarah Payne. She pressed on with “naming and shaming” paedophiles in the paper, dismissing concerns that she might inspire vigilante action. Flame-haired, twice-married Mrs Brooks graduated to become the first female editor of The Sun in 2003, and Andy Coulson took her place at the NOTW. In the same year she admitted to a Commons Select Committee on Culture in March 2003 that journalists had paid police for information.
