If there was more to this story, such as maybe the guy refused to cooperate with the authorities, there may be some reason to what happened. The guy made a lot of money by people uploading things for him illegally. In that respect maybe there should be some regulations.
HOWEVER, I think that P2P programs should exist, because I agree with @theglobalix in that the movies are generating a ton of money because they set the rules on cost. Netflix lost a lot of streaming even.
i’m used to buy movies legally through Itunes, but i used megaupload to download movies or shows that you can not find anywhere to get legally and is really sad that the goverment doesn´t find out that people used sites like megaupload because they gives us shows or music that the media corporations doesn´t even sell. @theglobalix I agree. You go a bit far in demonizing popular people though. There always will be entertainers who make tons of cash due to glamour and it’s inherent problems. But about the movie industry, yes, that’s why there is so much piracy. Movie tickets have nearly doubled in cost over the last fifteen years, especially in metro areas. People don’t go to the movies on a date as much these days because it ends up costing for two people to have a movie with some candy or popcorn like $40

It’s not like the movie industry is not profitable, they still make fortunes every year and if anything when people are sharing their movies it helps to keep their industry popular and entertainment for everyone. Cut down too much and the poorer will just move on to other sources of entertainment.

@BusinessIDBAI the megaupload owner didnt do anything illegal to begin with. megaupload was a file sharing site just like youtube is a video sharing site. megaupload took down illegal content regularly they even had a policy about it.

no, shes right. if you read the fbi “piracy” warning at the beginning of every dvd, you cant really show it at a ‘PUBLIC EXHIBITION” even if not for a profit. so how big a group is a “public?” your kids and your parents? how about neighbors? what about a music video at a frat party? and in the past, the record company lawyers usually went after private individuals, even children.
They shouldn”t be able to take Kim down for this. It’s not like he could possibly go through all the uploaded files to look for pirated material.

It was the way megaupload indexed the files!!!
When uploading a file megaupload would check to see if it had the file already in it’s database & if already had the file then it wouldn’t upload the content but just fabricate a link& when the file would be reported only the link would be deleted not the file in the database!!That is why! Read the indictment!What that means is Megaupload knowingly promoted & sustained piracy on it’s servers.

I totally agree with you BA i am caught up in this fiasco too, let me spell this out why this is so wrong.
In my country i can legaly own a safe deposit box, why i hear you ask, well if i have things that are important,sentimental or basically of no interest to anyone but me. Then there is no court in this Whole Wide World that if i am an upstanding law abiding citizen would ask to see what is inside my box,or even think about taking my possessions away even without asking,with no word if or even when i can get them back.

Yet not just someone but a group of people have the right to take my belongings. Yes im lawabiding who is looking after me who will somehow give me back my cherished memories of my family?

I hope the rest of the world see and make a stance that what has happened is ILLEGAL by US courts, since when did the legal system change to GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT?
